The Integrative Approach to Understand Health and Disease

Integrative medicine views the body as an interconnected whole. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, it seeks to understand the deeper causes of imbalance and support the body’s natural ability to heal.

There are four core integrative philosophies which guide integrative assessment and treatment:

The Root Cause of Illness

The body is a network of intelligent, interconnected systems. When one system becomes imbalanced, it can affect the whole and contribute to poor health.

The Root Cause of Illness & The Unity of Disease

Integrative medicine views the body as a connected and intelligent system. When balance is lost in one area, it can affect many others, often showing up in ways that may not seem obviously related yet often share common underlying causes such as inflammation, stress, poor nutrition, digestive imbalance, toxicity, and lifestyle factors.

Many people come to us with symptoms that seem disconnected—fatigue, digestive issues, headaches, skin concerns, hormonal changes, or chronic pain. While these symptoms may appear separate, they often share common underlying causes.

Our goal is to look beyond the symptom itself and understand the bigger picture. By identifying the root causes of illness, we help create the conditions for healing, resilience, and long-term wellbeing.

The Disease Continuum

Health and illness both exist on a spectrum. Long before disease develops, the body often shows early signs of imbalance.

The Disease Continuum & Vitality (Prana)

Health and illness both exist on a spectrum. Long before disease develops, the body often shows early signs of imbalance such as fatigue, poor sleep, digestive discomfort, brain fog, anxiety, apathy, or low resilience.

Integrative medicine recognizes the importance of vitality — also known as prana, or life force energy. When vitality is strong, the body is better able to heal, adapt, and maintain balance.

Our approach focuses on restoring vitality to prevent the disease progression and bring it towards the wellness side of the spectrum through nutrition, sleep, stress reduction, movement, emotional wellbeing, and healthy lifestyle practices.

Bio-Individuality

Every person is unique with their own genetic makeup and mind-body blueprint.

Bio-Individuality & Body Constitution

Every person is unique. We each have our own genetic makeup, life experiences, environment, and physiological tendencies that influence how we experience health and disease. Ayurveda describes this uniqueness as an individual's constitution, or Prakriti—their natural mind-body blueprint. When lifestyle, diet, stress, or environmental factors move us away from this natural balance, imbalances may begin to develop.

Through detailed health assessments and, where appropriate, nutrigenomic testing, we can gain insights into how your genes may influence areas such as nutrient requirements, detoxification pathways, inflammation, stress resilience, hormone balance, and metabolism.

The principle of bio-individuality reminds us that there is no single treatment that works for everyone. The True healing requires understanding the whole person and creating a personalised approach that supports their individual needs and restores balance.

The Toxic Burden

When the body’s natural ability to process and eliminate internal and external stressors is overwhelmed, toxic burden can accumulate and disrupt health and vitality

The Toxic Burden

Every day, our bodies are exposed to a variety of stressors, both external and internal. External stressors ranges from processed foods, environmental chemicals, heavy metals and mold toxins whereas the internal stressor may be in the form of poor elinmination, chronic stress, poor sleep, and emotional challenges. At the same time, the body naturally produces waste products through normal metabolism.

When digestion, detoxification, and elimination are not functioning optimally, these internal and external burdens can begin to accumulate.

In Ayurveda, this accumulation is known as Ama—waste that the body has not been able to fully process or eliminate. Ama can arise not only from food and metabolism, but also from unresolved stress, emotions, and life experiences that place an ongoing burden on the body and mind.

Over time, a growing toxic burden may contribute to fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and a reduced sense of wellbeing.

Our approach focuses on supporting the body's natural detoxification pathways, optimising digestion, nutrition, sleep, and emotional wellbeing, helping to restore balance, vitality, and resilience.

We believe the body has an innate capacity to heal when given the right conditions and support.

Our integrative wellness approach combines modern scientific understanding from functional medicine with holistic principles of Ayurveda to address the whole person — body, mind, and spirit.

Our approach is patient-centered, personalized, and focused not only on relieving symptoms, but on creating lasting health, resilience, and vitality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Integrative Medicine looks at your health as a whole rather than focusing on individual symptoms in isolation. It considers how factors such as nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, lifestyle, environment and emotional wellbeing may be influencing your health.

The aim is to understand the wider picture and develop a personalised approach that supports your overall wellbeing.

Your first consultation is an opportunity for us to understand you, not just your symptoms. We explore your health history, current concerns, nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, lifestyle and other factors that may be relevant.

This helps us build a more complete picture of your health and identify areas that may benefit from further attention or support.

Not necessarily. We begin with a detailed consultation and review any recent test results you may already have.

Where appropriate, we may suggest discussing further investigations with your GP or another healthcare professional. Additional testing may also be considered when it can provide useful information to guide your personalised plan.

Yes. Our approach is designed to complement appropriate medical care, not replace it.

If you are taking prescribed medication or receiving treatment from your GP or specialist, we encourage you to continue doing so. Where relevant, our recommendations can be developed with your existing medical care in mind.

Functional Medicine uses established knowledge of physiology, nutrition and lifestyle medicine while taking a more personalised and systems-based view of health.

At ShriAsha, we aim to use evidence-informed approaches while recognising the value of traditional practices where appropriate. Recommendations are considered in the context of the individual rather than applying the same approach to everyone.

There is no fixed number because every person's health journey is different.

Some people come to us for guidance around a specific concern, while others have more complex or long-standing symptoms and benefit from ongoing support. Following your initial consultation, we can discuss what level of follow-up may be appropriate for you.

We work with people experiencing a range of ongoing health and wellbeing concerns, including those relating to digestive health, immune and inflammatory health, stress and nervous system health, hormonal health, metabolic health and persistent pain or reduced wellbeing.

Rather than treating a diagnosis in isolation, we look at the different factors that may be influencing how you feel and function.

You don't need to know exactly what kind of support you need before contacting us.

If you have questions about our approach or whether it may be suitable for your circumstances, you can book a discovery call. It gives you an opportunity to briefly discuss what you are looking for and understand how we work before deciding whether to proceed.

Not Sure Where to start?
Many people experience symptoms that overlap multiple areas of health.
